Design, design, design. To put the wonders of a good design into perspective, imagine when we are purchasing a T-Shirt. First of all, what do we look at? The design of the T-Shirt, of course. Well most people do, other than the material factor. But let’s assume the all other factors are constant, wouldn’t the design or looks, become the key aspect then?

A good website

As anyone could imagine, a great place to market and sell yourself (not in a bad way you sick ducks) is on the web… It is, quite possibly, the first and foremost location you can and will be found nowadays… and if you don’t have a good website to advertise your skills and talents then you’re falling behind! Sites like MySpace, DeviantArt and other places where they showcase art and talent are good, however, they lack that personal touch. And a lot of times they don’t offer the options that you can get on your own by having your own site. Long story short, purchase a domain and start putting your stuff online… even if its a basic static page, at least you and your name will be out there and attached to something other than another persons or groups site!

The computer is a tool!

And ONLY a tool! You cannot depend on your computer to do the design for you. Your computer does not control the design. You must control the design, you must control the computer. Once people get carried away with everything a computer can do, they tend to count on the computer too much.

I used to work in a pretty stagnant environment for design. The work was dull and my employer was a complete kiss ass… never knew when to say “no”. Anyway, one of the biggest gripes I had while I was there, was the internet usage policy. For a while it was completely forbidden, then it got looser, then people abused it, then it was forbidden again. What does this say? The people that abused it obviously weren’t using the internet to their advantage. Most of the time they were on MySpace or checking email.

On the most basic levels, everyone knows what a logo is, but do they really know what all goes into a logo? A logo is a graphic representation of a company, product, YOU! Almost anything you see has some kind of logo or lettermark, something that identifies it and makes it memorable. When it comes to an identity for yourself or a client, a well-crafted logo is key.
