As anyone could imagine, a great place to market and sell yourself (not in a bad way you sick ducks) is on the web… It is, quite possibly, the first and foremost location you can and will be found nowadays… and if you don’t have a good website to advertise your skills and talents then you’re falling behind! Sites like MySpace, DeviantArt and other places where they showcase art and talent are good, however, they lack that personal touch. And a lot of times they don’t offer the options that you can get on your own by having your own site. Long story short, purchase a domain and start putting your stuff online… even if its a basic static page, at least you and your name will be out there and attached to something other than another persons or groups site!
A common issue that affects designers is the actual job description and/or workload. By this I mean, what a designer does as opposed to what a designer should be doing. When I sit down to start working, I want to design. I want to create. I want to use the gifts that I was given to do a job. I want to help. I want to solve problems.
I dont want to do word-processing… get a secretary.
I dont want to move furniture… do it yourself.
I dont want to make changes for a sales person… I make changes for CLIENTS.
I dont want to be a monkey.

I used to work in a pretty stagnant environment for design. The work was dull and my employer was a complete kiss ass… never knew when to say “no”. Anyway, one of the biggest gripes I had while I was there, was the internet usage policy. For a while it was completely forbidden, then it got looser, then people abused it, then it was forbidden again. What does this say? The people that abused it obviously weren’t using the internet to their advantage. Most of the time they were on MySpace or checking email.
I came into work today and was approached by my partner in the marketing department. He noticed that things over the past couple weeks have been a little hectic and jumbled. We had been getting a number of projects assigned during the week and then the next week we need to drop those projects and start some new ones… leaving the current projects on the back burner. My marketing guy was a little distraught by this. He was worried that with all the back-and-forth with the projects, and with so many things on our plate, that he would get burned out and just continue to be frustrated when the jobs get piled up.
