I used to work in a pretty stagnant environment for design. The work was dull and my employer was a complete kiss ass… never knew when to say “no”. Anyway, one of the biggest gripes I had while I was there, was the internet usage policy. For a while it was completely forbidden, then it got looser, then people abused it, then it was forbidden again. What does this say? The people that abused it obviously weren’t using the internet to their advantage. Most of the time they were on MySpace or checking email.
My beef with the policy comes from the need to get those creative juices flowing. When you are in a stagnant design environment, you need outside stimulation. You need to be able to take 5 and go look through some great websites. Check the latest trends or just see what the guy in the next city is doing with his design. Bottom line is: Internet usage is an important part of the design process. It should not be taken away. Closely monitored, sure. Forbidden, no.
When Im stuck, when Ive hit a roadblock, I like to jump online and visit some cool websites to inspire me. I also take a gander at a number of magazines and books to also help in the process. But when all you have is you computer and you, the internet is a powerful, and inspiring, friend.
