I recently noticed that the favicon for Google.com has changed. I hope that it’s a short term change. The lowercase “g” just doesn’t look right. It looks off-center and somewhat crooked and just reminds me of the number of revisions currently being done (and those that have been done within the last couple years) by companies for no reason. Google… what is the point of using the lower-case “g”… seriously it’s not the strongest part of the logo and again, visually it’s just off. Not that the Google logo is anything special, but still… My biggest gripe is AT&T… please go back to your old logo. You CANNOT get better than Saul Bass*, why the hell would you try! The lower-case font is terrible, the logo… while updated and maybe a bit more current… still isn’t as powerful as the original globe and capped letter treatment.

The weak logos coming out and overtaking the older, classic, BEST designs is a very disturbing thought for me. If this is the kind of crap that passes for graphic design nowadays, I’m in real trouble! It just doesn’t add up. I just don’t know what these people are thinking and who is feeding them the info that these designs are better? One little tip I have for corporate America. DON’T LET YOUR EMPLOYEES DECIDE ON A LOGO. If you just throw a bunch of crap in a hat and say pick the best, you’re gonna come up with crap. You need to get 2 or 3 INCREDIBLY STRONG logos that are professionally designed so that no matter what, you get a solid logo. Then you let people pick…

But my goodness, stop killing off the best logos the world has known for mediocre knock-offs.

*unless you’re paul rand. ;)
